Epidemiologist - Health Protection Surveillance Centre

Epidemiologists required for a number of locum roles with the Health Protection Surveillance Centre.
These positions will involve working remotely in a public health protection function.

Reporting to the relevant director of public health at the Health Protection Surveillance Centre and / or National Immunisation Office, you will be responsible for supporting the delivery of health protection functions through working closely with senior staff and other team members to develop new surveillance systems, expand on existing ones and provide epidemiological analytical support for surveillance and epidemiological activities, outbreaks, major events and research studies.
As a lead in their department, the Epidemiologist will oversee the work of surveillance assistants, surveillance officers and trainees within their team/area of work and will be required to supervise, mentor and train staff.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the design and implementation of new public health information systems, including surveillance systems
  • Expand, improve , manage existing ones, including using the CIDR (Computerised Infectious Disease Reporting) system and the SAP Business Objects Business Intelligence platform,
  • Develop a working knowledge of all public health information systems e.g. HIPE, PCRS, COVID Care Tracker (CCT)etc.Conduct epidemiological/statistical analyses of public health related data
  • Interpret epidemiological data, and input to recommendations
  • Provide technical and analytical support (including data management, data analysis and interpretation) in outbreak/epidemiological investigations, cluster analysis, exceedances, population health needs assessments, health care prioritisation exercises and evaluation and outcome studies

  • Have a good level of knowledge and experience in information management, data analysis and interpretation


Professional Qualifications

  1. Hold a post-graduate NFQ* level 9 qualification, or higher, in one of the following:
  1. Epidemiology
  2. Public Health
  3. Microbiology and/or Infectious Diseases
  4. Biological Sciences
  5. Biomedical Sciences
  6. Health Informatics
  7. Other relevant health sciences subject

And

  1. Have at least four years experience working in microbiology/infectious disease, biological/biomedical science, public health, health service research, epidemiology or a relevant health sciences field, where at least two years of which was in applying epidemiological/surveillance methods


And

  • Demonstrate depth and breadth of experience working in a research, scientific or health services environment involving infectious diseases, public health or epidemiology.
  • Demonstrate depth and breadth of experience in the analysis, interpretation and presentation of epidemiological and surveillance data.
